5 Been There Please Don’t Do That Rookie Interior Painting Mistakes

I am sure you’ve heard the phrase “Do as I say, not as I do”… well that’s the sentiment behind today’s post, inspired by the interior painting mishaps as a first time homeowner.

Your house is under construction and with the exception of a very big green wall that the previous owner painted himself, every single surface was just bottle sprayed by the builder. Correct?

And goodness did you spend a lot of time painting and learning along the way! But the walls just doesn’t look right? Thinking that you should have asked the professionals?

So without further adieu, here is the top 5 been-there-please-don’t-do-that rookie interior painting mistakes:

NOT SAMPLING THE COLOR BEFORE BUYING

Most shops sells tiny sample pots for a few Rands, so after narrowing it down to your favorite paint sample cards, invest in a few. Put a sample of each color on different walls in your room and see how they look in different lighting over the course of a few days before making a final decision.

ASSUMING WHITE IS WHITE

Nope! With a bazillion shades of white to choose from it’s tempting to roll your eyes and grab a can of untinted base, but choosing the right shade of white is just as important as with colors.

Remember, invest in some test samples from Point 1.

CHOOSING THE WRONG SHEEN

Medal Paints has a simple cheat sheet here.

IGNORING YOUR CEILING

Don’t forget the 5th wall! Pinterest is full of inspiration for unique ceiling treatments, but even if you stick with white, a fresh coat can really lighten up your room. Buy a cheap paint pole at the hardware store to screw into the handle of any standard roller, and for the corners just tape a paint brush onto the end!

BUYING THE CHEAPEST PAINT

I’m sure some will disagree with me on this one, but switching to name brand paint made the chore of painting soooo much easier. It has a better consistency (less drips), better coverage (fewer coats), and doesn’t look streaky on edges. Saving time and hassle is well worth the slightly higher price tag.Medal Paints is known as The Good Paint.

Good, because their paint won't harm you or your family's health. Good because they are involved and do good in our communities. Good because they care about the impact on the planet. Good because they simplify your life with a wide range of products and accessories. Good, because they offer good quality at good prices. But more than that, good because "good" is more than just an end product for them. For 30 years, it's been central to everything they do.
