The Psychology of Color: What are the Ideal Colors to Use in Your Home?

It is proven that colors can greatly affect our moods and behavior in many studies over the years. So making sure that you have the exact right colors for the rooms and decor in your home is somewhat super important we would say. How about a little more excitement in your life? Painting a wall or adding some color to your home might be just what you need.

Here at Paint Improvers we believe the following is the ultimate color guide for each area of your home:

Dining Room or Kitchen

The colors red, orange, and yellow stimulates your appetite. To make things more interesting, when you eat from a red plate, you will most likely consume twice as much calories as you would normally. For that very reason, many fast food restaurants has red, orange and yellow all over their restaurant. Wether it be the couch covers or the logo – They want you to eat. So rather do not paint your kitchen red, much less your dining room.

Try to prevent any red, orange and yellow accents around food as far as possible in fact J When you think of goodness, purity and cleanliness, you would normally think of whites or creams.

The Office or Study

Ever walked into an office where their color scheme is blue?

Did you find that the employees at that specific company was calm, centered and actually happy to help? (I am aware that this is South Africa) And the actual quality of service against an employee that works in a white wall office is astoundingly far apart.

Blue is absolutely the perfect color for your office walls, even the carpet, or just feature major blue accents. It lowers your heart rate and stimulates your brain to think more accurately, which is exactly why employees’ working within a blue environment, tend to make fewer mistakes. On the other hand, grey is one of the absolute worst colors you can choose for productivity as it is the most passive color and lacks the most energy. Unfortunately grey is a high trending paint color.

Living Room

Let’s face it. If you are not in your home office/study, you likely spend time relaxing and watching TV in your living room area. Green would be the best color choice for the following two reasons. First, it has a very calming effect on a person. It makes you feel calm. Calm is what you want after a very stressful long day.

Second, green is not so harsh on one’s sight. It produces the least amount of eyestrain, making this a good choice if you want to sit in front of the TV for a couple of hours. Orange is a stimulating color so it is not a good choice to use in a room where you want to spend time relaxing.

Master Bedroom

An interior trend that has surfased in South Africa is to paint the maste bedroom walls black. Black is the color of aggression or power. In your bedroom, do you not want the feeling of luxury, sumptuousness and comfort? Surprisingly, this is how purple will make you feel.

Just a tip: White sheets also subconsciously remind people of a sterile hospital bed—not great for in the bedroom.

Workout Gym Room

Most has a gym or workout room or at least a little section where they work out. This is where you can finally use orange. Orange will stimulate you and make you more enthusiastic during the session.Research has found that orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, which produces an energizing effect and stimulates brain activity.

So, get out those orange spandex when you go to Zumba! Grey is the opposite of orange because it is the least energetic color and would be a terrible motivator in a home gym.

Bathroom

Remember how big the yellow sun is in the show Telly Tubbies? Yellow is a happy color. According to some philosophy somewhere, it stimulates proper nerve function and assists our endocrine system and liver to function optimally.

To have a smooth working digestion and a happy morning—since the bathroom is usually the first place you go, yellow is the best color. Black would be a bad idea for a small room like the bathroom because it would make the room look even smaller and boxed in. Making it uncomfortable.

OF COURSE, colors aren’t the only thing that affect how people see us — one can still be efficient in a grey office or eat less on a red plate.
